About WEBP to PNG

Converting WEBP to PNG gives you a lossless copy that nearly every image editor, presentation tool and upload form accepts, with transparency intact. It is the safer choice when you intend to edit the picture rather than just look at it. Each file is decoded and re-encoded by this page inside your browser and is never uploaded.

How to use WEBP to PNG

  1. Add the .webp files from your downloads folder.
  2. Check that Convert to is on PNG; there is no quality setting, because PNG is lossless.
  3. Click Convert to PNG.
  4. Download each PNG, or take the whole set with Download all (.zip).

What people use it for

  • Editing a downloaded website graphic in Photoshop, GIMP or Canva.
  • Placing an image into PowerPoint or Word on a machine that does not recognise WEBP.
  • Keeping a transparent logo transparent while moving it into a design file.
  • Attaching an image to a portal whose accepted list is only JPG and PNG.

Good to know

Transparency is preserved. The PNG will usually be several times larger than the WEBP, since PNG stores every pixel while WEBP compresses hard. If the source is a lossy WEBP, its existing artefacts are copied across, and PNG cannot recover detail that was already discarded. Animated WEBP converts as its first frame only.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything lost converting WEBP to PNG?
No new loss is added, because PNG is lossless. Whatever the WEBP contains is stored exactly, including any compression artefacts already baked into a lossy WEBP.
Why is the PNG so much larger?
PNG keeps full pixel data with no lossy compression. A 200 KB WEBP photo commonly becomes a 1 MB PNG, which is normal behaviour and not a sign that something went wrong.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. PNG has an alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges come through from the WEBP unchanged.
