Data Analyst Roadmap

Excel, SQL, Power BI and Python for business insights.

Who this is for: commerce and BBA graduates, accountants, MIS executives and anyone who already works with spreadsheets and wants to do it properly. It is the shortest of our roadmaps, and it is the most common first data job in India. Plan for 8–10 hours a week, about three to five months.

Why Excel comes first. Almost every company you will join still runs on Excel. An analyst who can clean a messy export, build a pivot table and write an XLOOKUP in front of a manager earns trust on day one. SQL comes second because it is how you get data out of the company's systems without waiting for IT. Power BI and Python come later; they are force multipliers, not starting points.

How to use it: build every project on the same imaginary business, for example a sweets shop with three branches, or download our free sample datasets. By the end you will have a workbook, a set of SQL queries, a dashboard and an automated report that all tell one connected story. That is a much stronger interview than four unrelated exercises.

What interviews look like: an Excel test (lookups, pivots, cleaning), a SQL test (joins, GROUP BY, often one window function), and a case discussion about a dashboard. Practise explaining a chart in two sentences: what it shows and what should be done about it.

Common mistakes: learning DAX before understanding data modelling, building dashboards with fifteen visuals on one page, and not defining a KPI before charting it.

1

Excel mastery

3 weeks

Clean exports, build lookup and summary formulas, and turn raw rows into pivot tables and clear charts. Focus on the tasks managers ask for every week: monthly sales by branch, top products and month-on-month change.

  • Formulas & lookups
  • Pivot tables
  • Charts
  • Data cleaning

SQL

4 weeks

Pull exactly the data you need from a database. Filtering, joining and grouping cover most daily work; window functions answer ranking and running-total questions that are painful in Excel.

  • SELECT & filtering
  • JOINs
  • GROUP BY
  • Window functions
  • CTEs

BI tools

4 weeks

Model your data as a star schema, write DAX measures for the KPIs that matter, and design a dashboard a busy manager can read in thirty seconds. Then publish it and set up refresh so it stays current.

  • Power BI data modelling
  • DAX
  • Dashboard design
  • Publishing

Python for analysis

4 weeks

Automate the report you build by hand every Monday. pandas reads the files, cleans and summarises them, and writes a formatted Excel or chart, which turns an hour of copy-paste into one click.

  • Pandas
  • Matplotlib
  • Automation of reports

Business skills

2 weeks

The difference between an analyst and a report generator. Agree on KPI definitions before building, ask what decision a chart will support, and present findings as a short story with a clear recommendation.

  • Stakeholder communication
  • KPI definition
  • Storytelling with data
