About PNG to ICO

ICO is the icon container that Windows and web browsers use, and a proper favicon.ico holds several sizes in one file. This tool turns a PNG into an ICO containing 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel versions, so the browser tab, the bookmark bar and a desktop shortcut can each take the size they need. It all runs in your browser.

How to use PNG to ICO

  1. Add a square PNG; a 256x256 or larger logo gives the sharpest result.
  2. Set Convert to on ICO; no quality or background option appears, since the icon keeps transparency.
  3. Click Convert to ICO.
  4. Download the file and rename it favicon.ico before placing it in your website root.

What people use it for

  • Making a favicon.ico for a WordPress, Shopify or hand-built business website.
  • Creating an icon for a Windows desktop shortcut or a small application.
  • Turning a designer's logo PNG into the icon file a developer asked you for.
  • Replacing an old blurry favicon with a crisp 256 pixel version.

Good to know

The source is scaled to fit each square size and centred, so a non-square logo gets transparent padding instead of being stretched. Transparency is kept in all six sizes. Browsers cannot preview .ico files, so the result appears as a file card rather than a thumbnail. Fine detail vanishes at 16 pixels, so use a simple mark.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes does the ICO file contain?
Six of them: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, all inside one file. Windows and browsers automatically pick whichever size fits where the icon is being drawn.
Does my PNG have to be square?
It does not, but a square source looks best. A rectangular image is scaled to fit and centred inside each square, with transparent padding around it.
Where do I put the favicon.ico file?
In the root folder of your site, so it is reachable at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Most browsers find it there by themselves; you can also link it from the page head.
