Django Developer Roadmap

Become a full-stack Django developer.

Who this is for: anyone who wants to build complete web applications in Python, from the database to the page the user sees. Django is a good first framework because it includes the admin, authentication, forms and an ORM, so you build real features instead of wiring libraries together. Plan for 10–12 hours a week over four to six months.

Why we teach it this way. This website, including its client portal and GST billing, is built with Django, so the roadmap follows the order we would use to train a junior developer on a real project: enough Python and HTTP to understand a request, then Django's core, then the database work that keeps pages fast, then APIs, and finally deployment.

How to use it: build one project that grows with you. Start with the blog in stage 2, add an inventory or orders module in stage 3, expose it through a REST API in stage 4, and deploy the whole thing to a real server with HTTPS in stage 5. A live URL on your resume is worth more than any certificate.

What interviews look like: questions on the request/response cycle, how the ORM turns into SQL (and the N+1 query problem), CSRF protection, migrations, and a walkthrough of a project you have deployed.

Common mistakes: putting business logic in templates, running with DEBUG=True in production, never using select_related or prefetch_related, and committing secret keys to GitHub. Stage 5 covers each of these.

1

Python & web basics

4 weeks

Enough Python to be comfortable with functions and classes, enough HTML and CSS to build a clean page, and a clear picture of what happens between typing a URL and seeing a page.

  • Python
  • HTML & CSS
  • HTTP basics
  • Git

Django core

6 weeks

Models, the ORM, views, URLs, templates and forms: the parts every Django project uses. Build a blog with user accounts and comments, and use the admin to manage its content.

  • Models & ORM
  • Views & URLs
  • Templates
  • Forms
  • Authentication

Databases

3 weeks

Move from SQLite to MySQL or PostgreSQL, design tables with the right indexes, read the SQL the ORM generates, and fix slow pages caused by repeated queries.

  • MySQL / PostgreSQL
  • Query optimisation
  • Migrations

Milestone project: Inventory system with reports

APIs & async

4 weeks

Expose your data to mobile apps and other services with Django REST Framework, secure it with token authentication, and move slow work such as emails and reports to background tasks.

  • Django REST Framework
  • JWT auth
  • Celery & Redis
  • Webhooks

5

Deployment

2 weeks

Put your project on a real server: Gunicorn behind Nginx, HTTPS, environment variables for secrets, `DEBUG` off, static files collected, and an automated deploy so updates are one command.

  • Gunicorn & Nginx
  • Docker
  • HTTPS
  • CI/CD

Milestone project: Deploy your project to a VPS
