About GIF to PNG
This converter saves a GIF as a PNG still. GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, while PNG handles full colour and cleaner transparency, so PNG is a better home for the picture once it no longer needs to move. Be clear on one point: only the first frame is converted, so animation is not preserved. Conversion happens locally in your browser.
How to use GIF to PNG
- Add your .gif files to the drop area.
- Keep Convert to on PNG.
- Click Convert to PNG, and the browser decodes the first frame of each GIF.
- Download the stills one by one or as a single ZIP.
What people use it for
- Pulling a clean still out of a reaction GIF to use as a thumbnail.
- Converting an old GIF logo or web banner to PNG before editing it.
- Getting a GIF into software or a form that takes PNG but not GIF.
- Saving a chart or diagram that was exported as GIF in a full-colour format.
Good to know
Animation is lost, because a PNG holds one frame and the browser hands over the first. If the GIF has a transparent background, that transparency carries over to the PNG. Colours are not improved: a 256-colour GIF that already shows banding will show the same banding in the PNG, which simply stores it losslessly.
