About Excel to CSV

Excel to CSV turns an XLSX, XLS or ODS workbook into plain CSV files that any accounting package, billing software or import screen will accept. Pick one sheet or export every sheet at once, and choose the separator the receiving system expects. The workbook is read by JavaScript inside your browser, so your sales register or customer list is never uploaded to a server.

How to use Excel to CSV

  1. Drop your Excel workbook onto the page or click to choose it.
  2. Pick a single sheet from the Sheet list, or leave it on All sheets.
  3. Set the delimiter to comma, semicolon, tab or pipe to match the system you are importing into.
  4. Keep UTF-8 BOM ticked if the data has Hindi text or the rupee sign, then click Convert to CSV.
  5. Download each CSV from the results list.

What people use it for

  • Preparing a customer or item master for import into Tally, Zoho Books or Busy
  • Feeding monthly sales rows into a Python or R script that only reads CSV
  • Sending a sheet to someone who has no copy of Excel installed
  • Exporting every sheet of a multi-sheet workbook as separate files in one click

Good to know

Only cell values are exported. Formulas become their last calculated result, and colours, merged cells, images and charts are dropped because CSV has no way to store them. Dates come out the way the sheet displays them. Untick UTF-8 BOM only if the target system complains about stray characters at the start of the file.

Frequently asked questions

Does each sheet become its own CSV file?
Yes. With All sheets selected the tool writes one CSV per sheet and names each file after the workbook plus the sheet name, so nothing gets mixed together.
Why should I keep the UTF-8 BOM ticked?
The BOM tells Excel the file is UTF-8, which keeps Hindi, Marathi, Tamil text and the rupee sign readable. Without it Excel often shows those characters as question marks.
Are my formulas converted too?
No. CSV stores values only, so each formula is replaced by the number or text it currently shows. Recalculate the sheet in Excel before converting if any result looks stale.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but the whole workbook is loaded into your browser's memory. Files of a few hundred thousand rows work on a normal laptop; very large ones may be slow on a phone.
