About Word to Text / HTML

Word to Text / HTML pulls the contents out of a .docx file as plain text, tidy HTML or Markdown. Use it when you need the words without Word's formatting baggage: pasting into a CMS, moving notes into a documentation site, or feeding a document into a script. Switch between the three outputs without re-opening the file, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use Word to Text / HTML

  1. Open your .docx document in the drop area.
  2. Choose Plain text, Clean HTML or Markdown from the three buttons.
  3. Read or edit the result in the output box.
  4. Copy it to the clipboard or download it as .txt, .html or .md.

What people use it for

  • Moving an article from Word into WordPress or Ghost without dragging in Word's inline styles
  • Converting project notes or a thesis chapter into Markdown for a docs site or GitHub
  • Extracting the raw text of a contract so you can search or diff it
  • Getting clean text out of a document to paste into an email or a form field

Good to know

Only .docx is supported; save an old .doc file as .docx first. Extraction uses Mammoth, so headings, lists, tables and links come through while fonts, colours, headers, footers, text boxes and embedded objects do not. Plain text mode drops all structure including tables, so choose HTML or Markdown when the layout matters.

Frequently asked questions

Which output should I pick for a website?
Clean HTML for a CMS that accepts HTML, Markdown for a docs site or README. Both keep headings and lists; plain text keeps only the words.
Are tables preserved?
Tables survive in the HTML and Markdown outputs. Plain text has no way to express a table, so there the cell text is flattened into lines.
Does it work on a .doc or PDF file?
No. Only .docx is read here. Save a .doc as .docx in Word first, and use the PDF tools for PDF files.
Can I get the comments and tracked changes?
No. Only the accepted document body is extracted; comments, tracked changes and revision history are not included in any of the three outputs.
