About Word & Character Counter

Word & Character Counter tells you how long a piece of writing is and how long it takes to read or say aloud, updating as you type. Beyond the basic counts it shows sentences, paragraphs, average word length and the fifteen most repeated meaningful words. Built for students with assignment limits and writers with editor briefs. Your text stays in the browser tab and is never sent anywhere.

How to use Word & Character Counter

  1. Type directly in the box, or paste your essay, article or caption.
  2. Read the tiles above for words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences and paragraphs.
  3. Check the reading and speaking time estimates if you are preparing a talk.
  4. Look at the Top keywords list to spot words you are overusing.

What people use it for

  • Keeping a college assignment or SOP inside a strict word limit
  • Checking a social media caption or meta description against a character limit
  • Timing a speech or presentation script before rehearsing it
  • Spotting repeated words in an article before sending it to an editor

Good to know

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, which are averages, not promises. Sentences are counted at full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and the Devanagari danda, so abbreviations can inflate the count slightly. Common filler words are excluded from the keyword list so the terms shown are the ones that matter.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?
A word is any run of letters or digits, with apostrophes and hyphens treated as part of the word. Devanagari and other Indian scripts are counted the same way as Latin text.
Do the counts match Microsoft Word?
They are normally identical or within a word or two. Small differences appear around hyphenated words, numbers and symbols, where tools apply slightly different rules.
What does the Top keywords list show?
The fifteen most frequent words longer than two letters, with common fillers like the, and and of removed, so you can see which real terms dominate your text.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in the page itself and nothing is transmitted or saved. Closing the tab discards the text completely.
