About Text Compare (Diff)

Text Compare puts two versions of a text side by side and highlights exactly what was added and what was removed, with a running count of each. Compare by word, by line or by single character depending on how fine a difference you are chasing. Useful for contract drafts, code snippets and edited articles. Both texts stay in your browser and are never uploaded.

How to use Text Compare (Diff)

  1. Paste the original version into the left box.
  2. Paste the changed version into the right box; the comparison runs automatically.
  3. Switch Compare by between Words, Lines and Characters to change the detail level.
  4. Read the highlighted result below, where additions and deletions are marked separately.

What people use it for

  • Checking what a client changed in the latest draft of an agreement
  • Comparing two versions of a configuration file or code snippet
  • Seeing what an editor altered in your submitted article
  • Confirming two supposedly identical lists really do match

Good to know

Word mode is the best default for prose, line mode suits code and configuration files, and character mode catches a single changed digit in an amount or an account number. The counts show added and removed pieces at the level you selected. A badge tells you when the two texts are exactly identical, including whitespace.

Frequently asked questions

Which comparison mode should I use?
Use Words for prose and contracts, Lines for code and config files, and Characters when you suspect a single digit or letter has changed.
Can I compare two Word or PDF files directly?
Not directly. Extract the text first with Word to Text / HTML or a PDF text tool, then paste both versions here.
Does it notice whitespace differences?
Yes. Spacing is included in the comparison, so a text that looks the same but has extra spaces or line breaks will still show as different.
Are my texts sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs in the page, which is why it is safe for contracts, salary letters and other confidential drafts.
