About Readability Checker

The Readability Checker scores English writing on six standard formulas, including Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade, and then shows you where the trouble sits. Long sentences are shaded in your text, adverbs are underlined and likely passive voice is highlighted. Marketers, students and anyone writing for a general audience can use it to tighten a draft. It all runs in the browser.

How to use Readability Checker

  1. Paste your English draft, such as a blog post, email, product page or assignment, into the box.
  2. Click Check readability, or just pause typing and the scores refresh by themselves.
  3. Read the Flesch reading ease tile first; 60 to 70 is plain English, and the label under it names the level.
  4. Scroll to the highlighted text to find orange and red long sentences, underlined adverbs and marked passive phrases.
  5. Split the shaded sentences, cut weak adverbs, rewrite the passive lines, and watch the scores move.

What people use it for

  • Marketers checking that a landing page or ad copy reads at a general-audience level.
  • Students making sure an assignment is clear rather than padded with long sentences.
  • Rewriting a customer email or policy note so ordinary readers understand it first time.
  • Meeting a house style rule such as grade 8 or below for help-centre articles.

Good to know

The formulas count syllables, words and sentences, so they only work on English; Hindi or other scripts will not score meaningfully. They measure sentence and word length, not whether your argument makes sense, and passive-voice detection is a simple pattern match that misses some cases and flags others wrongly. Aim for a reading ease around 60 to 70 for a general audience.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch reading ease score?
For a general audience aim for 60 to 70, which is plain English at roughly eighth-grade level. News writing sits near 65, while legal and academic text often falls below 30 and feels heavy.
Why are my sentences shaded orange or red?
Orange marks sentences over 20 words and red marks those over 30. Long sentences are the quickest thing to fix: split them at the conjunction and the scores improve straight away.
Does it work for Hindi or other Indian languages?
No. Every formula here counts English syllables and letters, so text in Devanagari, Tamil or other scripts produces meaningless numbers. Use it on English drafts only.
Are adverbs always bad?
No. The underline is a prompt to check, not a rule. Cut the ones that add nothing, such as very or really, and keep any adverb that carries real meaning.
