About Compress PDF

Compress PDF shrinks heavy files by re-rendering every page as an optimised image at the quality you pick. It works best on scanned documents and photo-heavy brochures that are too big for an email or a portal upload limit. The whole job runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device, and you see the before and after size before downloading.

How to use Compress PDF

  1. Load the PDF you want to make smaller.
  2. Pick a level: Extreme for the smallest file, Recommended for a balance, Light to keep detail.
  3. Tick Convert to grayscale if the document has no colour worth keeping, such as a scanned form.
  4. Click Compress PDF and check the size saving shown beside the result before downloading.

What people use it for

  • Getting a scanned property document under a 2 MB upload cap on a government portal.
  • Emailing a photo-heavy product catalogue that is too large to attach.
  • Reducing a scanned Aadhaar and PAN set before attaching it to an online KYC form.
  • Shrinking a phone-scanned marksheet that came out at 15 MB.

Good to know

Pages are converted to JPEG images, so text in a digitally created PDF stops being selectable or searchable and can look softer at the Extreme setting. Such files often barely shrink because they are already compact. If the result would end up larger than the original, the tool keeps your original and says so.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?
Because it is a text PDF, which is already compact. This tool saves space by re-rendering pages as images, which mainly helps scans and photos. Text documents can even grow, in which case the original is kept.
Will the text still be searchable after compressing?
No. Every page becomes an image, so you cannot select, copy or search the text afterwards. Keep the original if you need a searchable copy and compress only the version you upload.
Which level should I choose for a portal upload?
Start with Recommended and check the size on the result. If it is still over the limit, try Extreme and tick grayscale, which often halves a scanned black-and-white document again.
Is the file uploaded for processing?
No. Rendering and compression happen in your browser, so scanned IDs and bank papers never travel over the network. Results are wiped when you close the tab.
