After-school learning for children in Mumbai's eastern suburbs

Why Prerna exists

Prerna Foundation is a fictional charity created to demonstrate what an NGO's website can look like. The children, the numbers and the results below are invented for the demonstration.

On a real NGO site, this page carries the things a serious donor checks before giving: what the organisation does, who it reaches, how it measures whether that worked, and who is accountable for the money.

The problem, stated plainly

A child in an overcrowded municipal classroom can reach Class 5 without reading fluently. Once that happens, everything after it gets harder, and most of them stop coming.

What we actually do

Six centres, open every evening. Groups of twelve, sorted by reading level rather than age. The same teacher for a whole year, so a child is known. A meal first, then two hours of work.

What we publish

Attendance, reading levels at the start and end of each year, and the annual audited accounts. A real NGO page would also carry the registration number, 12A and 80G details and the FCRA position — the four things an informed donor looks for before donating.

Founder & Director — a fictional person, for this demonstration

An invented founder created for this sample site. A real charity's page would carry the founder's background, the trustees' names, and how the board is held accountable.

Donors give to people as much as to causes, which is why this page exists on a real NGO site and why it should be written by the founder rather than by an agency.

A fictional person. The qualifications shown are not real and belong to nobody.

What we stand for

  • Teachers hired from the same communities as the children
  • Attendance and learning levels published every quarter
  • A hot meal before every class, because nobody learns hungry
  • Parents' meeting once a month, in the evening, when parents can actually come
  • Accounts audited annually and published in full
